A private members club is transformed by Breezefree with the introduction of classic awnings at the front and an innovative adjustable roof over its rear terrace.
Breezefree’s brief was to improve the look of the front of the club and to provide a stable yet lightly structured pergola roof for the client’s break out area and barbecue space in a rear garden of 80 square metres. The client’s interior designer handed some concept ideas to Breezefree for the pergola, highlighting the need for a visually unobtrusive structure that would act as a suntrap on sunny days. Although a good starting point, Breezefree could see that the structure would also have to provide protection from rain and snow with adjustable heating in colder months.
The front of the building was relatively straightforward, with high quality branded awnings installed to give the club’s front of house that important finishing touch. Regarding the pergola, there were no suitable products on the market that would be slimline and self-supporting over such a wide span. Therefore, Breezefree set about designing a bespoke structure. Initial ideas of a timber clad steel box-section frame proved to be cost-prohibitive and it was questionable whether the structure would weather well under the conditions. Instead, a glued laminated hardwood was chosen for the pergola frame, with a modified retractable pergola awning roof to fit underneath. This allowed effective water run-off to the extreme sides of the structure, with guttering and heating also built in. Structural calculations and other considerations were completed before installation.
To the client’s delight, Breezefree designed, manufactured and installed on budget and within the seven-week deadline, providing a touch of distinction to the front of the building and an elegant adjustable roof to the rear terrace.
